How to Request Financial Aid
A student requests assistance from the Financial Aid Office
by completing and submitting the following materials:
(1) Thomas Aquinas College's Confidential Family Financial
Statement (CFFS). This form is obtained from the College
and submitted directly to the College's Financial Aid Office.
The CFFS can also be downloaded from
College's website.
(2) The Department of Education's Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is required
of all U.S. citizens and permanent residents seeking financial
aid fromt he College. The easiest way to complete the FAFSA is
on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
(The student and at least one parent will need to request a PIN
from www.pin.ed.gov
in order to sign the FAFSA on-line.) The FAFSA can also be completed
using a paper version of the form, but the processing time is
much slower. Paper FAFSAs can be obtained from college counseling
offices at most high schools or from the Financial Aid Office
at Thomas Aquinas College.
The results of both the on-line and paper forms will be sent
to the College so long as the College's schools code is included
in the appropriate section of the FAFSA. The school code for Thomas
Aquinas College is 023580. Thomas Aquinas College requires
that parental income and asset information be included on the
FAFSA for both dependent and independent students unless
the Director of Financial Aid has specifically instructed otherwise.
(3) Tax returns: Beginning in 2010-11, all financial aid
applicants must submit a signed copy of their parents' federal
tax return with W-2s (T-4s for Canadians), supporting schedules,
and K-1s, as well as a signed copy of the student's federal tax
return with all W-2s (T-4s for Canadians), supporting schedules
and K-1s.
If a student's parents have separated or divorced, the noncustodial
parent's household (including spouse, if remarried) must provide
a signed copy of their federal tax return with all W-2s (T-4s
for Canadians), supporting schedules, and K-1s.
If a parent or student has applied for an extension to file the
tax return, send a copy of the extension form to the Financial
Aid Office by April 15th and then send a copy of the tax return
when it is completed. You must correct the FAFSA and CFFS immediately
after filing the tax return.
(4) Noncustodial Parent Statement: If a student's parents
have separated or divorced, the noncustodial parent must complete
a Noncustodial Parent Statement. This form is available on our
website or may be requested by e-mail from the Financial Aid Office.
As explained above, tax information is also required.
(5) Business Farm Supplement: If a parent or student is
self-employed, owns a farm, or has an interest in a Limited Liability
Company (LLC), Partnership or Corporation, he must complete a
Business/Farm Supplement. The Business/Farm Supplement is available
on the College's website or can be requested by e-mail from the
Financial Aid Office.
A parent or student with an ownership interest in a Partnership,
"C" Corporation or "S" Corporation may provide
a signed copy of their most recent 1065, 1120 or 1120S tax return
in lieu of the Business/Farm Supplement. All related schedules,
balance sheets and K-1s must also be provided.
(6) Other Information: In some cases the College may require
additional information to clarify unusual circumstances or to
satisfy verification requirements of state or federal agencies.
(7) Loan application: If a student intends to borrow from
the Stafford Student Loan program, and is an incoming freshman,
a Master Promissory Note application (MPN) will be sent
with the financial aid award letter. The MPN should be completed
and returned to the College's Financial Aid Office along with
the other signed financial aid paperwork. Alternatively, a student
may complete his MPN online through the website of any one of
the participating lenders. Please
notify the Financial Aid Office by phone or e-mail if you have
completed your MPN on-line. If a student intends to borrow
from a source other than the Stafford Student Loan program (e.g.
Canada Student Loan program), the appropriate forms should be
obtained by the student and submitted to the loan agency.
