
Christoph Cardinal Schonborn, Director of the Catholic Catechism,
To Preside Over 2002 Commencement Ceremonies

Christoph
Cardinal Schonborn, O.P., the Cardinal-Archbishop of Vienna,
will preside over the 2002 Commencement Ceremonies at Thomas
Aquinas College on June 8. He will receive the Colleges
Thomas Aquinas Medallion, an award reserved to those who have
demonstrated extraordinary dedication to God and His Church.
Cardinal Schonborn is one of the worlds most visible
prelates, having served as Director of the Catholic Catechism,
which Pope John Paul II promulgated in 1994. His work brought
him in touch with bishops and theologians around the globe
in assembling what has come to be recognized as one of the
most important single documents in the history of the Catholic
Church.
Concelebrating Baccalaureate Mass with Cardinal Schonborn,
and serving as principal homilist, will be Fr. C. John McCloskey
III, Director of the Catholic Information Center in the Archdiocese
of Washington, D.C. Fr. McCloskey also serves as the U.S.
representative for the ecclesiastical faculties of the Pontifical
University of the Holy Cross in Rome and the University of
Navarre in Pamplona, Spain.
Fifty-nine seniors (32 men and 27 women) are expected to
receive bachelor of arts degrees. The seniors hail from 20
states, Canada, Austria, and Puerto Rico, with more than one-third
(20) coming from California.
Commencement ceremonies will begin with Baccalaureate Mass
at 9:00 a.m., followed by a continental breakfast and then
Commencement at 11:00 a.m. Members of the public are welcome.
