New residence hall for men completed and dedicated to the
Prince of the Apostles and the Apostle to the Gentiles
(January 17, 2002)
Thomas Aquinas College celebrated the addition of a new residence
hall for men at its campus in Santa Paula on Thursday, January
17. The 23,900 square-foot building provides living space
for 106 men and a private suite for a resident priest.
Los
Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Curry presided over ceremonies,
which began with Mass in St. Bernardine Library and continued
with a procession to, and blessing of, the building named
after Saints Peter and Paul.
Many friends of the College joined members of the Board of
Governors, students and faculty for the event, which was highlighted
by the remarks of Bishop Curry, College President Thomas E.
Dillon, and Paul E. Griffin III, president of Griffin Industries
in Westlake Village. Mr. Griffin, a real estate developer
who serves on the College's Board of Governors, was a principal
benefactor for the building.
Other major benefactors of the $3.6 million residence hall
include Mr. and Mrs. James Barrett (Mr. Barrett is the founder
of Chateau Montelena Winery in Calistoga, California), Mr.
and Mrs. Mark Belnick (Mr. Belnick is Vice-President and General
Counsel, Tyco International in New York), Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Mills (Mr. Mills is founder and former CEO of The Milsolv
Companies in Butler, Wisconsin), Dr. and Mrs. Henry Zeiter
(Dr. Zeiter is the founder of Zeiter Eye Clinic in Stockton,
California), and three foundations: The Weingart Foundation
(Los Angeles), The Greycoach Foundation (Long Lake, Minnesota),
and The Joseph B. Gould Foundation (Las Vegas, Nevada).
Entry
to the residence is through a courtyard adorned with a fountain
and inner balcony. The main lounge opens into a two-story
beamed ceiling and provides residents with four side lounges
and two fireplaces.
Scott Boydstun of Ventura's Rasmussen & Associates was
the design architect, while construction was supervised by
HMH Construction Co. of Ventura. Maria Paul of J.H. Interiors
