Thomas Aquinas schedules convocation
(August 6, 2006)
Bishop Michael J. Sheridan of Colorado Springs, Colo., will
preside over the convocation ceremonies Aug. 21 as Thomas
Aquinas College in Santa Paula welcomes its largest freshman
class ever.
Sheridan will be the principal celebrant and preach the homily
at the Mass of the Holy Spirit, which begins the day's activities.
The college expects 103 freshmen this year.
Three new faculty members, Jeffrey Lehman, who holds a doctorate
in philosophy from the University of Dallas; John Finley,
a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of Dallas;
and Joseph Hattrup, who has completed his doctoral course
work at the University of Houston, will go through ceremonies
that day to join the college's staff.
Thomas Aquinas is a four-year Catholic liberal arts college
exclusively devoted to the study of the Great Books, using
only the Socratic method of dialogue in all of its classes.
There are no textbooks, no lectures and no electives.
Instead, the college offers an entirely integrated curriculum
using only the original texts of the greatest thinkers who
have helped shape Western civilization.
