
Thomas Aquinas College To Host Third Annual Catholic Writers
Conference

Thomas Aquinas College will host its third
annual Catholic Writers' Conference on Saturday, January
11, 2003, at its campus in Santa Paula.
The day-long conference will feature writers who will discuss
their craft of writing and offer guidance for ''wannabe''
writers, said College Relations Director Dave Shaneyfelt,
who will moderate the Conference. More than 100 writers attended
each of the last conferences.
Best selling author Matt Pinto, founder of Ascension Press
in Philadelphia, and co-founder of Envoy magazine, will give
the luncheon keynote address and receive the St. Augustine
Award for Excellence in Writing. His 1998 teen catechism book,
Did Adam & Eve Have Belly Buttons?, has sold more than
100,000 copies to date.
The conference will feature three afternoon workshops: Screenwriting,
by Matt Sommer (Murder, She Wrote), fiction writing by Bernardine
Connelly Clark (Follow the Drinking Gourd, Rabbit Ears), and
Catholic free-lance writing by Karen Walker (National Catholic
Register).
Dick Lyles, author of Winning Ways - 4 Secrets for Getting
Great Results by Working Well with People, will speak on ''Bridging
Over - Writing for Secular Appeal. ''Lyles is President and
CEO of the celebrated business training network, The Ken Blanchard
Companies, in San Diego.
Chris Weinkopf, editorial editor of the Los Angeles Daily
News, will talk on ''Inside the Editorial Room.''
College chaplain Fr. Andrew Koch, O.S.B., will open the conference
with a brief spiritual reflection, followed by Jim Bemis,
columnist for CatholicExchange.com, who will give a presentation
on ''ABCs of Good Writing.'' Cost for the day-long conference
is $40 ($20, for students with ID) and includes lunch and
continental breakfast. Registration deadline is January 6.
