On Saturday evening the St. Genesius Players treated Thomas Aquinas College students, faculty, and families to a production of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, presented in a modern setting.

Named for the patron saint of actors, the St. Genesius Players is a student-run organization that puts on one play each spring. The directors of this year’s performance were seniors Gianna Coccia and John Turrentine, who held auditions early last semester. Last week student actors, actresses, costume and set designers, lights, sound, and stage crews descended upon St. Joseph Commons for a busy round of final rehearsals. The result was Saturday’s energetic performance, which often sent the packed audience into peals of laughter.

Annie Gribbin, a senior, headed up the cast with a lively and mischievous portrayal of the play’s title role, Katharina. Fellow senior Sean Donnelly played the part of Petruchio, her fortune-seeking groom. Other dramatis personae included Katherina’s sister, Bianca (Rachel Williams ’19); their father, Baptista (Joseph Daly ’19); and Bianca’s sundry suitors, Gremio (Sean Malloy ’18), Lucentio (Peter Gardner ’18), and Hortensio (Michael Pfeiffer ’18).
