Fans of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings converged on the Dumb Ox Coffee Shop last night for the first-ever Tolkien Trivia Night, organized by freshman Joe Daly. Several teams of five contestants squared off in the competition, which featured a series of increasingly obscure questions about all things Middle Earth. The winners for the evening were members of the squad captained by tutors Andrew Seeley, Patrick Gardner, and Tony Andres.

“In spite of missing two of the first three questions, and trailing for more than half of the night, we rallied to take the lead,” reports Dr. Seeley. “Having failed to nail down the win on the final question about the Nauglamir, we took home the crown by remembering five of the seven sons of Feanor.” The turning point, he adds, came when Dr. Gardner remembered the final clause of the inscription on the Ring in the Black Speech. “Great fun was had by all!”
