FRITZ B. BURNS FOUNDATION AWARDS COLLEGE $3.2 MILLION GRANT
New classroom building: St. Gladys Hall
Thomas Aquinas College has received a grant of $3.2 million from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation of Los Angeles for the construction of a new classroom building. St. Glady Hall — the thirteenth building constructed since the College acquired the undeveloped site for its campus in the 1970s — will nearly complete the academic quadrangle, which is anchored by Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. Housing eight classrooms, the building is designed to facilitate the small, seminar discussions which are at the heart of the College’s unique academic program. Ground-breaking ceremonies will be held in the spring of 2013, and construction will begin following Commencement in May. Completion of St. Gladys Hall is expected in the spring of 2014.

COLLEGE RANKED #2 FOR ALUMNI GIVING
Rate More than Quadruple National Average,
Reflects Alumni Satisfaction
U.S News & World Report has named Thomas Aquinas College No. 2 out of more than 1,200 colleges and universities nationwide on its newly released rankings of alumni giving. The rankings are based on the percentage of alumni who contribute to their colleges and universities. Alumni-giving rates are, according to the magazine, “a gauge of alumni satisfaction” and a sign of “school spirit” — a reflection of how much graduates value the education they received as students.
“We are profoundly grateful to our alumni for their generous and sacrificial support,” says Vice President for Development Paul J. O’Reilly. “Not only do alumni gifts help to cover our $4 million in annual financial aid costs, they also attract the support of philanthropic foundations, which use alumni giving as a measure of the College’s institutional strength.”

The Faith in Action blog is a running report about the good works of Thomas Aquinas College alumni. Recent news on the blog includes:
• Updates from Clear Creek Monastery, where 11 alumni monks currently live and pray. In December, three of those monks, Br. Peter Miller (’07), Br. Robert Nesbit (’07), and Br. Patrick Carter (’05) made their solemn professions. In October, two other alumni monks were ordained to the transitional diaconate: Br. Andrew Norton (’06) and Br. Christian Felkner (’01).
• The Cardinal Newman Society’s profile of Michael Van Hecke (’86), in which Mr. Van Hecke describes his conversion from a would-be surfer to an award-winning educator.

A Round-Up of Recent Stories
A new online college guide, TheBestSchools.org, has compiled detailed college rankings that focus specifically on undergraduate education, exempting schools whose reputations derive mostly from their research or graduate programs. Using this measure, the guide has named Thomas Aquinas College to its list of “The 50 Best Colleges in the United States” — one of only two Catholic colleges to be do so designated.
Meanwhile, Eric Owens of The Daily Caller has published a list of “14 small, very interesting Colleges” that “punch well above their respective weight classes,” including Thomas Aquinas College. The College, he observes, is “a demanding and seriously Catholic bastion of the liberal arts and sciences … that specializes in the Great Books.” He further notes that “Every student completes the same four-year interdisciplinary” program, which features “Homer, Aristotle, St. Augustine, Shakespeare and, of course, plenty of St. Thomas Aquinas.”

SUPPORT THE COLLEGE WITH YOUR IRA! Tax-Free Rollover through February 1
The popular IRA Charitable Rollover is back: Taxpayers who are at least 70½ years old may make contributions directly to the College from their IRAs without incurring the normal taxation. Such contributions are not counted as income, but they do count toward the annual Required Minimum Distribution.
The American Taxpayer Relief Act amended on January 2 extends the IRA Charitable Rollover through all of 2013 — and makes it retroactive through 2012, too! Qualified distributions must be made by February 1, 2013 to be counted retroactively for the 2012 tax year.
