ALUMNI VOCATIONS
Ordination for Rev. Nathaniel Drogin, O.Praem. (’01), First Vows for Sr. Maria Battista of the Lamb of God (’07)

On Saturday, June 20, Rev. Nathaniel Drogin, O. Praem. (’01), received the Sacrament of Holy Orders at Mission Basilica in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Fr. Drogin is the College’s 59th alumni priest, and the fifth at St. Michael’s Abbey in Orange, Calif., where four other alumni are currently seminarians or novices. Ordaining Fr. Drogin was the Bishop of Orange, the Most Rev. Kevin Vann, J.D., D.D., who will offer the opening Mass of the Holy Spirit and preside at Matriculation at the College’s Convocation exercises on August 26.

Also last month, Maria Forshaw (’07) was clothed with the habit of a Discalced Carmelite novice at a June 8 ceremony at the Carmel of St. Joseph in St. Louis County, Missouri. Having spent a year as a postulant, she took the name of Sr. Maria Battista of the Lamb of God. At the Carmel, she is deeply involved in music-making as both a singer and organist.

LECTURE  &  CONCERT  SERIES
College Announces Schedule for 2013-14

On Friday nights throughout the 2013-14 academic year, the students of Thomas Aquinas College will have the privilege of attending lectures from some of the nation’s most distinguished scholars — covering a wide range of topics from evolution to natural law to Thomistic theology — through the St. Vincent de Paul Lecture and Concert Series.

The Series, endowed by Barbara and Paul Henkels, complements the the College’s classroom discussion method and academic program. It also provides for several concerts of classical, operatic, or sacred music.

Interview with “Chart-Topping”
Alumna Sister

Writing in the Cardinal Newman Society’s Catholic Education Daily, Timothy Drake has conducted a rare interview with Sr. Mary Josefa, OSB (Kathleen Holcomb ’07), of the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of Apostles. The Sisters’ Advent at Ephesus album of sacred music topped the Billboard Classical Music Chart for six weeks last year, and the community has recently released a new album, Angels and Saints at Ephesus. In his interview, Mr. Drake asks Sr. Josefa about her experience at Thomas Aquinas College and about the role of liturgy, sacred music, and Catholic identity in higher education. Among her notable responses:

“I chose to attend Thomas Aquinas College because it integrated classical and Catholic education; I was fascinated by the liberal arts program, with its consideration and discussion of original sources, introducing the student to the perennial questions with which mankind has always grappled, but I was further drawn by the Catholic identity of the school, which orders this program of studies to lead the student from the contemplation of created truth to the contemplation of God Himself.”

FAITH IN ACTION BLOG
Prayers Offered & Answered

The Faith in Action blog is a running report about the good works of — and prayer requests for — Thomas Aquinas College alumni. Recent news on the blog includes a prayer of thanksgiving as well as an urgent prayer of supplication:

In December, the family of Loraine (Ivers ‘81) Hoonhout invited friends to join them in praying to Servant of God Frank Duff (founder of the Legion of Mary) for healing in Mrs. Hoonhount’s struggle with cancer. By God’s grace, those many prayers have borne good fruit! Mrs. Hoonhout reports that her cancer is stable, and doctors have reversed their earlier prognosis that she would only live for another year or two. Thanks be to God!

Meanwhile, the College also prays for a cure for Eric Stoutz (’93), who has been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. Please join us in praying for Eric’s health, as well as for the peace of mind of his wife, Monica (Chavez ’92), and their eight children.

SPACE STILL AVAILABLE!
Not too late to Register for Summer Seminars on Marriage & Family and Human Work

Space is limited, but still available, for three summer seminars/events sponsored by Thomas Aquinas College:

• On the weekends of July 12-14 and July 19-21, President Michael F. McLean will host two Great Books Summer Seminar Weekends on campus. The timely theme for the weekends is marriage and the family. Attendees will gain an inside look at the unique education the College provides its students, while enjoying good fellowship and developing a deeper understanding of important issues facing the Church and the world.

• Please join members of the Thomas Aquinas College faculty for a buffet breakfast and seminar about the meaning and implications of Laborem Exercens, Bl. John Paul II’s 1981 encyclical on human work. The seminar will take place on August 1, just prior to the official start of the Napa Institute’s 2013 conference, “Catholics in the Next America,” in Napa, Calif. The seminar and breakfast are complimentary and open to all attendees of the Napa Institute Conference.
