Cardinal DiNardo Addresses College’s Largest Graduating Class
On May 11, Thomas Aquinas College graduated the largest class in its history — the 91 members of the Class of 2013. The day began with the Baccalaureate Mass of the Holy Spirit in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. This year’s Commencement Speaker, His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, served as the the principal celebrant and homilist.
Following the Mass, just outside the Chapel on the academic quadrangle, was the Commencement ceremony itself. Cardinal DiNardo delivered the Commencement Address, and graduate Liam Collins (’13) presented the Senior Address on behalf of his classmates.

MEDALLION OF ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
College Awards its Highest Honor to Cardinal DiNardo and Fr. Buckley
At Commencement 2013, the College awarded its highest honor, The Saint Thomas Aquinas Medallion, to two men who have dedicated their lives to the service of the Church and its people: His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo and College Chaplain Rev. Cornelius M. Buckley, S.J..
The Saint Thomas Aquinas Medallion, an award established by the College’s Board of Governors in 1975, is a means of recognizing those Catholics who have shown, through their lives and work, an extraordinary dedication to God and His Holy Church. Each recipient has demonstrated unfailing adherence to the Magisterium as well as influential leadership in advancing the teachings of the Church. The Medallion is awarded by resolution of the Board of Governors on behalf of the entire College community.

LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK
Incoming Freshman, Alumnus Offer Complementary Perspectives on College
“I want to get an education for the whole person and not just a degree,” says incoming freshman Rachel Beck (’17) in a recent interview with the Arizona Daily Sun. A member of the National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society, Miss Beck works three jobs to help her family of 11 supplement the financial aid package that will enable her to attend Thomas Aquinas College.
Will her sacrifices be worth the effort? If the experiences of Daniel Carpenter (’11) are any indication, yes.
A graduate student in political science at Claremont University, Mr. Carpenter has published a thoughtful essay for The John William Pope Center for Higher Education about his time at the College: “It was an educational leap of faith,” he writes, “yet also an exercise that instilled ethical and intellectual excellence.”
Separated by six class years, Miss Beck and Mr. Carpenter together provide compelling “bookends” perspectives of the College’s academic program — the dreams of the freshman and the reminiscences of the graduate. “This will be a really great experience,” says Miss Beck hopefully. Indeed, it was, reflects Mr. Carpenter: “Some of my fondest memories from that time involve great conversations under a large proud oak and washed in the rays of a balmy California sun.”

FROM THE CHAPLAIN’S LAPTOP
Clean Churches, Clean Hearts
On his personal blog, Thomas Aquinas College’s newest chaplain, Rev. Joseph Illo, likens the great care that the College’s students take for Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel to the work of the Missionaries of Charity.
“The Missionaries of Charity love Jesus very much. How do I know that? Because they sweep, polish, and wipe down their chapels every morning,” writes. “I am pleased to report that the students at Thomas Aquinas College, who have graciously afforded me a place to live and work and pray, assiduously clean our temple every day as well. First, I should say, they purify it by their prayers. I rarely enter our great marble chapel without the consolation of seeing a few students at prayer. Second, I am delighted to say that three or four students are assigned to keep the chapel spotless.….”

AMBASSADORS TO THE WORLD
Boards of Regents Host Events in Washington, San Francisco & Los Angeles
The Thomas Aquinas College Boards of Regents serve as the College’s ambassadors, making known the influence and good works of the College within their own communities across the United States, while at the same time inviting new members into the fold.
The first Board of Regents, which serves the Greater Los Angeles Area, was formed in 2004, but as the influence and reach of the College have grown, the desire for organization in other regions has arisen. Therefore, within the last year, the College has established three new boards — in New York, Washington, D.C., and Northern California — with more planned for the near future. Already, the Boards have worked diligently to raise the College’s profile and introduce it to new friends, sponsoring recent events in Alexandria, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
