PRAYERS FOR THE POPE EMERITUS
College Honors Beloved Pontiff
Thomas Aquinas College has long held His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in great esteem, dating back to his time as the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In 2008 he personally blessed the cornerstone of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. In gratitude, the former Holy Father’s coat of arms and papal motto are inlaid in the marble of the Chapel’s central aisle — just feet away from where, on February 27, the College’s chaplains offered a special Mass for his well being, only hours before his resignation.
“Through the holiness of his life and the rich treasure of his writings, Pope Benedict XVI has taught us that the Truth — who is Christ, the Word of God made flesh — should be at the center of all our learning and all our endeavors,” says Thomas Aquinas College President Michael F. McLean. “May God grant this beloved pontiff every grace as he begins a new phase of his service to the Church, and may He bless the great work Benedict undertook during his pontificate.”

THE COLLEGE AND THE “PAPABILI”
Has the Next Holy Father Visited Thomas Aquinas College?
Among the cardinals being discussed as “papabili,” or possible successors to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, are six friends of Thomas Aquinas College. All six have served as Commencement Speakers, and all have received the College’s highest honor, the Saint Thomas Aquinas Medallion.
The “papabili” who have visited the College are:

We join them, as well as all the faithful, in eagerly awaiting the announcement of those joyous words, Habemus Papam!

TURNING ON THE LIGHT
An Alumna Reflects on Her Time with the High School Summer Program
A doctoral student at the Catholic University of America, Kathleen Sullivan (’06) has served as a prefect at the Thomas Aquinas College Great Books High School Summer Program for each of the last eight years. She has recently written the following reflection about her experience as a student in the program a decade ago:
“[I]t took me a couple more classes before I gathered my courage to enter into my class conversation. Once I did, it was the light turning on again. This was how school should be! To be responsible for my learning, to develop my critical thinking skills, to learn how to effectively communicate, to read and discuss these texts without the filter of an editor was all in my grasp. I wanted to skip the rest of high school and enter Thomas Aquinas College right away. Yet I returned to high school with a new perspective on education, and found myself more frequently raising my hand to ask questions or propose comments. An education is not passive; it is active, alive, and all within reach at colleges such at Thomas Aquinas, where to be liberally educated is to be truly free....”

Great Books Summer Seminar Weekends
Each July, the president of Thomas Aquinas College hosts two Great Books Summer Seminar Weekends. These weekends take place on the College’s campus, nestled in the foothills of the Topatopa Mountains. Attendees gain an inside look at the unique education the College provides its students, while enjoying good fellowship and developing a deeper understanding of important issues facing the Church and the world.
This year’s weekends, which will take place on July 12-14 and July 19-21, will focus on the theme of marriage and the family. To register for one of the weekends, please contact Patti Harmonson at 805-421-5929. (President’s Council members will be given priority.)

A Round-Up of Recent Stories
“I was a parish priest for 20 years, and now I am a college chaplain,” Thomas Aquinas College Chaplain Rev. Joseph Illo recently wrote on his blog. “What’s the difference? In the parish I prepared people for divorce, and in the College I prepare them for marriage.” At the College, he says, students prepare to live out faithfully their vocation, whatever that may be.
Meanwhile, the new issue of Legatus Magazine features a story about The Prophet of Our Time, a new documentary about Bl. John Paul II by filmmaker Lannette Turicchi. Mrs. Turicchi, a former head of nontheatrical distribution for DreamWorks SKG, is the wife of the vice chairman of the College’s Board of Governors, R. Scott Turicchi, who served as the film’s executive producer.
Finally, Thomas Aquinas College is one of the nation’s 75 “Best Value” private schools according to the Princeton Review in its just-published book, The Best Value Colleges: 2013 Edition. The College is the only private Catholic college in California to be named a “Best Value,” and one of only five private Catholic institutions in the country, along with Boston College, the College of the Holy Cross, Georgetown University, and the University of Notre Dame.
