IN MEMORIAM
College Mourns Loss of Founding President, Dr. Ronald P. McArthur
Four decades ago, Dr. Ronald P. McArthur made an enormous leap of faith. Leaving his home and a good job behind, he moved some 400 miles to become the founding president of Thomas Aquinas College — an institution which, at the time, had neither a campus, money, nor students. What it did have, however, was a promising vision, based on fidelity to the Church and a restoration of Catholic liberal education. That vision, sustained by Dr. McArthur’s deep faith, was more than enough to inspire what, to most, seemed his audacious gamble.
Four decades later, Thomas Aquinas College mourns the loss of the man who led the College from its nascence to its firm establishment as an institution widely recognized for both its excellence and its faithfulness to the teaching Church. In the early hours of October 17, 2013, Dr. McArthur succumbed to renal disease at the age of 89.
“The entire Thomas Aquinas College community is united in prayer for Dr. McArthur,” says President Michael F. McLean. “Of course, we pray first for the repose of his soul and the consolation of his wife, Marilyn, but we also offer a deep, heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving. We thank God for blessing us with this good, holy man, who was our mentor, our colleague, our teacher, and our friend.”

YEAR OF FAITH
Rev. Robert Barron Lectures on Scriptural Roots of Reverent Liturgy
To mark the close the Year of Faith, Thomas Aquinas College recently hosted Rev. Robert Barron, who spoke on the subject “David Dancing Before the Ark: The Liturgical Theology Implicit in 2nd Samuel” as part of the St. Vincent de Paul Lecture and Concert Series.
The rector and president of Mundelein Seminary, University of St. Mary of the Lake, Fr. Barron is best known for his work as the creator and host of Catholicism, a beautiful, award-winning documentary series about the Catholic faith that has appeared on PBS and EWTN. Drawing from the content of his forthcoming book about the liturgy, Fr. Barron cited the solemn protection God extends to the Ark of the Covenant as an example of the importance of proper worship. Throughout the Scriptures, Fr. Barron remarked, God attempts to “Eden-ize” man — that is, return him to harmony with Himself, his fellow man, and nature — by teaching him “right praise,” culminating in the Lamb’s Supper as foretold in the Book of Revelation.

NEW REVIEWS
College Receives High Marks from Newman Guide, Kiplinger & Regina magazine
Three new reviews, coming from secular and Catholic sources, have encouraging words to say about Thomas Aquinas College, its program of Catholic liberal education, and its affordability.
The latest edition of The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College recommends Thomas Aquinas College as one of only 22 schools nationwide for Catholic fidelity. The College, it reports, has “an impressive intellectual rigor that is matched by a commitment to orthodox Catholicism.”
Meanwhile, Kiplinger has ranked Thomas Aquinas College number 41 out of just 100 schools on its 2014 Best Private Colleges list. The business and personal-finance publisher has also named the College to its list of the Top 10 Best Values in Private Colleges Under $20K (net).
Finally, in its introduction to an interview with Director of College Relations Anne Forsyth, Regina Magazine describes the College as “dedicated to renewing what is best in the Western intellectual heritage.” The magazine further observes that, since its founding in 1971, Thomas Aquinas College has enjoyed “great growth and increasing recognition.”

VOCATIONS VISITS
Religious Communities Visit College
Over the course of the last month, three religious communities — the Capuchin Franciscans, the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa, and the Nashville Dominicans — have visited Thomas Aquinas College to meet with students who are discerning vocations to the religious life. In the upcoming months the College looks forward to additional visits from the Sisters of Life and the vocations director of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Historically about 10 percent of the College’s graduates enter the priesthood or religious life. Five members of last year’s 91-member graduating class, for example, have already entered seminaries or religious orders, and Head Chaplain Rev. Joseph Illo anticipates that several current students will follow suit. “Usually we will get about 15-20 students at each one of the vocations presentations, which is a good, healthy number,” he reports. “Vocations directors love to come to the College for that reason.”

“MONTH OF THE DEAD”
Chaplain Fr. Illo Stresses Need for Prayer
“November is the month of the dead,” begins Head Chaplain Rev. Joseph Illo in a recent homily, in which he stresses the need to pray for the souls of the faithful departed:
“Yesterday we offered Mass at Santa Paula cemetery, with the graves of those we love around us. To the left was Ron McArthur and Marcus Berquist, just in front of us was Rosie Grimm and John Blewett, to the right was the beautiful stone cross marking Tom Dillon’s grave. God gave us the joy of loving these people on earth; now God gives us the joy of praying for their souls in eternity.”
