WELCOMING A NEW SHEPHERD
Bishop Byrne Visits, Blesses New England Campus

On March 5 Thomas Aquinas College, New England, was blessed with a visit from its newly appointed bishop, the Most Rev. William D. Byrne.

His Excellency arrived on the Northfield, Massachusetts, campus in the morning for a meeting with College officials. He then offered the midday Mass in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, during which he blessed the Stations of the Cross and a recently acquired statue of St. Joseph. The Bishop then joined students for lunch in the Gould Commons.

“A word of thanks to Dean Kaiser and to Fr. Markey for inviting me to be here … and for the privilege of being able to bless St. Joseph in this, his year, and the Stations of the Cross,” His Excellency remarked at the end of his homily. “I look forward to being here with you many times.”

Ever since the previous Bishop of Springfield, Massachusetts — the Most Rev. Mitchell Rozanski — was transferred to St. Louis last June, the College has eagerly anticipated the appointment of a new shepherd, praying regularly for a holy and faithful leader. The Lord answered those prayers in October, when His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Bishop Byrne to the Diocese of Springfield. Two months later, His Excellency was installed as the diocese’s tenth bishop.

ONE PROGRAM, TWO COASTS
College Launches New Site to Reflect Two Campuses

At around 7:00 p.m. last Thursday night, Thomas Aquinas College launched a new website, replacing its beloved but well-worn predecessor, which served the College ably since 2011.

“Our new site reflects more than a year’s efforts on the part of a dedicated team here at the College, working with our partners at KWALL, who developed the site,” says Chris Weinkopf, the College’s director of communications. “We are thrilled with the way it’s turned out, and we are hopeful that it will help us better connect with prospective students, alumni, parents, benefactors, and other friends about our unique program of Catholic liberal education.”

While some of the improvements to the site are cosmetic, others reflect more substantial changes, including enhanced portals for alumni, students, and parents. “The biggest difference, aside from the overall appearance, is that the new site is built to serve two campuses,” says Mr. Weinkopf.  The new website offers news, events, a faculty/staff directory and Admissions information all organized by campus.

OUTPOURING OF GENEROSITY
Alumni Smash Records & Goals for 2021 Giving Weekend

When the Thomas Aquinas College Alumni Giving Weekend began in earnest on March 5, organizers were hoping to meet an ambitious goal of $100,000. “Last year we had 287 alumni make gifts for a total of $62,000,” says Robert Bagdazian, the College’s director of alumni and parent relations. “So $100,000 seemed like a big leap.”

Yet the alumni of Thomas Aquinas College dramatically eclipsed that total, contributing 684 gifts for $141,226. “The response was staggering,” says Mr. Bagdazian. “The alumni showed their love for the College in dramatic fashion.”

The reasons for the outpouring of generosity are many: a new Alumni Giving Weekend website, a raffle for a seven-day luxury cruise for two, and student volunteers who telephoned alumni throughout the weekend to encourage their participation. Yet the biggest factor, by far, was a herculean effort on the part of the alumni themselves.

FAITH IN ACTION: LENT EDITION
Reflections from the College's Alumni Blog

• This Lent alumnus attorney David A. Shaneyfelt (’81) — a regular honoree on the list of California “Super Lawyers” — has once more turned his attention to the most significant criminal proceeding in the history of jurisprudence: the trial of Jesus Christ. Two years ago Mr. Shaneyfelt posted a series of free podcasts in which he investigated Our Lord’s trial, beginning with His arrest, and continuing all the way through the Crucifixion. Last year the Ventura County attorney added an episode to the collection, a reflection on the “Two Thieves.” And this year, he has produced yet another addition: “The Centurion,” a podcast about the Roman soldier at the foot of the Cross.

• The current edition of Magnificat features a lovely reflection on Luke 4:24-30 from Wendy-Irene (Grimm ’99) Zepeda, a homeschooling mother of six. The Nazoreans in this passage — who try  to throw Jesus over a cliff — are blind “to the incredible fact that God has ripped open the curtain of time to live familiarly with them.” How often, she asks, do we fall prey to this same failure? “It was around this time last year that COVID-19 began depriving many of Mass, something we once took for granted, a bit like Jesus’ neighbors,” observes Mrs. Zepeda. “My heightened hunger for the Eucharist made me regret any time I didn’t fully appreciate that great gift.”

• To honor the year of St. Joseph, the Dominican Friars of the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus are producing a Lenten video novena to the Patron of the Universal Church. In their first installment, “Joseph, Husband of the Mother of God & Diligent Protector of Christ,” an alumnus priest — Rev. John Marie Bingham, O.P. (’00), the Western Dominican Province’s director of vocations — leads the prayer. In subsequent episodes, fellow alumni preach about two of St. Joseph’s titles: Rev. Br. John Winkowitsch, O.P. (’04) discusses St. Joseph’s title of “Most Valiant,” and Rev. Michael Hurley, O.P. (’99)  considers “Pillar of Families.”

PRAYER REQUESTS
Special Intentions: Maggie Yanoschik (’23) and Thomas P. Sullivan

• Please pray for Maggie Yanoschik, a sophomore on the California campus, who is hospitalized with a serious condition involving a mid-brain bleed. On March 6 she underwent procedure to relieve intracranial pressure, and she is currently sedated and on a ventilator. “Please pray that her intracranial pressure stays low and that she heals well,” writes her father, Matthew. “Her neurosurgeon is still deciding when the best time for definitive intervention would be, and what he thinks the best treatment is.” She is receiving good care, and her family is hopeful. Please pray for her complete recovery!

• Please pray for Thomas P. Sullivan, the first chairman and a longtime member of the Thomas Aquinas College Board of Governors. A friend and benefactor of the College since its earliest days, Mr. Sullivan is hospitalized, presumably due to a recurrence of cancer. Please pray for his comfort, his well-being, his spiritual protection, and the peace of his family.
