Last Friday evening a group of Thomas Aquinas College students sung the National Anthem for some 300 boys and their families at the opening ceremony for the Santa Paula Little League.

For the second year in a row, “The B-Shop Boys,” the College’s barbershop quartet, treated fans at Richard Ruiz Field to “The Star Spangled Banner” sung in four-part harmony. Beforehand, the singers — Sean Malloy (’17), Joe Kucel (’16), Joe Daly (’19), and Richard Varadan (’16) — warmed up their vocal cords, and the crowd, with their renditions of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “I Love You Truly.”

Introducing the group, and serving as emcee for the ceremony, was Thomas Aquinas College tutor Dr. Andrew Seeley. The father of four boys who once played in Santa Paula Little League, Dr. Seeley has sung the National Anthem at past years’ opening ceremonies. He has also called many a game from the announcer’s box.

“It was wonderful to see the College represented once again at this event, which means so much to the families in our community,” says Director of Admissions Jon Daly — the father of three Santa Paula Little League players and secretary for the league’s Board of Directors. “Thomas Aquinas College has been sponsoring the league for years, and we’re honored to participate in any way we can.”
