Nine pose together

Between presenting more Euclid propositions and pondering the highest good with Boethius, students on the New England High School Summer Program left Wednesday’s classes excited, but mentally depleted! They were overjoyed, therefore, to find a gorgeous summer afternoon outside St. Gianna Molla Hall, just in time for open recreation period.

A large number of students snagged a few prefects to play an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee on the athletic field. Section-mates who minutes before had merrily sparred about whether two angles were equal or whether wealth was the highest good merrily sparred again on the grass, forming just the kind of friendships that makes campus life at Thomas Aquinas College thrive. Some students also relaxed by studying for Thursday’s classes.

Thoroughly exhausted in body as well as mind, many more students simply sat down and let the rhythms of the campus hum around them for the afternoon. Eventually, those rhythms led everyone to dinner, after which students departed for a nearby drive-in movie theater to watch the film Secondhand Lions. Since the film could not be projected until after dusk, programmers mingled in front of the screen for a bit, enjoying traditional movie-theater snacks and playing lawn games while the sun drifted toward the horizon and the lightning bugs began to shimmer in the fields — a perfect summer evening in Western Massachusetts.

After the movie, students came back late to campus, whereupon the men bade the women goodnight and all returned to their residence halls, where they fell gratefully into their beds.

Come back to the Summer Program Blog later today to hear how the well-rested students tackle Euclid’s increasingly complex propositions and confront more of Boethius’s questions about the highest good!
