Scandal in the Church, particularly among its ministers, can tempt some believers to lose faith in the sacraments and their efficacy. At such times it is worth reflecting on St. Thomas Aquinas’s discussion of these matters in the Summa Theologiae. St. Thomas argues that the sacraments, as works of God alone, are causes of grace, even if conferred by “evil ministers.” Indeed, “Those who approach the sacraments,” he writes, “receive an effect whereby they are enlikened not to the ministers but to Christ.”

Dr. Paul O’Reilly, a 40-year veteran of the teaching faculty and TAC’s president, will lead a breakout session, “St. Thomas on the Sacraments and their Ministers,” where attendees will analyze a short, highly accessible reading, in a seminar modeled after the College’s classroom conversations. (Register for the seminar to receive the text beforehand.)
