Thomas Aquinas College officials have responded with optimism to the U.S. Supreme Court’s order — less than a week after hearing oral arguments in the case of Zubik v. Burwell — that both sides file supplemental briefs to aid the justices in their decision. “This is encouraging news,” says President Michael F. McLean.

What brought me to Thomas Aquinas College — some 6,000 miles from my home in Buenos Aires, Argentina — were two of my high school teachers, who were probably two of my favorite people in the world. Both were graduates of the College.

This morning the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of Zubik v. Burwell, in which Thomas Aquinas College and 34 co-plaintiffs, including the Little Sisters of the Poor, challenged the federal government’s HHS Contraceptive Mandate. President Michael F. McLean and the College’s general counsel, Quincy Masteller, witnessed the proceedings inside the Courtroom while, outside, Vice President Paul J.

My name is Elizabeth Claeys. I am the Chair of the Washington, D.C. Board of Regents at Thomas Aquinas College, and a graduate of its Class of 1999.

It is an honor to be here today to offer support for my alma mater, for the Little Sisters of the Poor, and for all the plaintiffs.

Tomorrow the Supreme Court of the United States will hear oral arguments in Zubik v. Burwell, a consolidated lawsuit against the HHS Mandate. Thomas Aquinas College, where I serve as general counsel, is one of the 35 plaintiffs in the case, which includes the Little Sisters of the Poor and The Catholic University of America, among others.
