Culminating a process that began in the spring of 2017, Thomas Aquinas College has received approval from the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education to operate a second campus in Western Massachusetts, where it will award the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts. The decision sets the stage for Thomas Aquinas College, New England, to open its doors in fall 2019.

On Columbus Day, a 25-year old statue of the holiday’s namesake found a new home on the campus of Thomas Aquinas College.

“We are pleased to place this statue of Christopher Columbus on our academic quadrangle,” said President Michael F. McLean. “And we are grateful to College Governor Robert Barbera for giving it to us.”

Thank you, Dr. McLean. I welcome this opportunity to offer very brief comments on this occasion.

For nearly 40 years, Thomas Aquinas College has operated on a 131-acre property in Santa Paula, California. By God’s grace, the size of that property has now expanded more than six-fold.

At the end of August, College officials acquired more than 700 acres of surrounding open space. The acquisition substantially re-assembles the historic Ferndale Ranch along Santa Paula Creek, 131 acres of which were first deeded to the College in 1975.

Dedication of St. Cecilia Hall

“After much work and prayer by so many members of the College community, we gather now to bless and dedicate this new lecture and concert hall to St. Cecilia,” declared the Most Rev. José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles, at Thomas Aquinas College on Monday. “It will be a center of the College’s lecture and concert series — and a place for its students’ performances and other wholesome entertainment.”

In response to the newest revelations of scandal in the Church, the Most Rev. Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, Wisconsin, has published a thoughtful Letter to the Faithful in his diocesan newspaper.

On Friday nights throughout the 2018-19 academic year, the students of Thomas Aquinas College will have the privilege of attending lectures from some of the nation’s most distinguished scholars — covering a wide range of topics — through the St. Vincent de Paul Lecture and Concert Series.

Last week, as Thomas Aquinas College’s High School Summer Program wound its way to an end, elsewhere on campus another group of students gathered for an altogether different sort of instruction. Meeting in two classrooms in St. Albertus Magnus Science Hall, some 11 adults from across the United States took part in a six-day class in Byzantine icon-writing, offered by the New York-based Prosopon School of Iconology.
