On April 15, the fifth anniversary of the death of Dr. Thomas E. Dillon, Thomas Aquinas College President Michael F. McLean announced the creation of a new scholarship fund, named in memory of the College’s late president. The Thomas E. Dillon Memorial Scholarship Fund will support the nearly 80 percent of Thomas Aquinas College students who require financial assistance in order to afford a genuinely Catholic liberal education.

Giving thanks to God “for Dr. Dillon and for all the kind and generous people who have built this school,” the Most Rev. José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles, visited Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday. The day marked both a solemn occasion and a joyous one — the fifth anniversary of the death of President Thomas E. Dillon, and the blessing of two bronze plaques and a book that honor the benefactors of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel.

Throughout the year, the College hosts representatives of various religious orders and movements within the Church to speak to students about vocations to the priesthood or religious life. The start of April has been an exceptionally busy time for such events, with three groups visiting campus.

Black letters now appear above the central archway of the College’s newest building, announcing its name to passersby: St. Gladys Hall.

With that small addition, the construction project on the northwest corner of the academic quadrangle looks ever more like the new classroom building it will soon become. Across the quadrangle, workers have installed matching lettering on the College’s first dedicated classroom building, St. Augustine Hall.

Two members of the Thomas Aquinas College teaching faculty, Dean Brian T. Kelly and Tutor Katherine M. Gardner, participated in a gathering of theologians this past weekend at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Conference Center, sponsored by the Most Rev. José H. Gomez. The event included theologians from all the Catholic colleges and universities in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — St. John’s Seminary, Loyola Marymount University, Mount St. Mary’s College, and Thomas Aquinas College.

Over the course of the past academic year, several of the College’s students and recent graduates have led Confirmation and First Holy Communion classes at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in nearby Santa Paula. This past weekend, the confirmation group held a retreat on the College’s campus for some 75 high school students, which included Mass in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel, talks on the Faith, prayer, and games:
