Note: Rev. Joseph Illo, head chaplain at Thomas Aquinas College, delivered the following homily at today’s 11:30 a.m. Mass, just hours before most of the College’s students departed for the Walk for Life West Coast in San Francisco.

On Monday, members of the Sisters of Life visited Thomas Aquinas College to meet with students who may be discerning vocations to the religious life. The community, founded by John Joseph Cardinal O’Connor, is dedicated to serving pregnant women in crisis and to championing the pro-life cause. The Sisters visited the College en route to the 2014 Walk for Life West Coast, where they will march alongside some 50,000 other pro-lifers, including more than 200 of the College’s students.

On Friday the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and Treasury appealed Thomas Aquinas College’s recent victory over the HHS Contraceptive Mandate in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Progress continues apace on construction of the College’s next classroom building, St. Gladys Hall. “The building is now more than 50 percent complete and on schedule for being ready for use by late June,” reports Vice President for Finance and Administration Peter L. DeLuca. “The basic structure is about complete. Filling in details and interior and exterior finish work — along with the exterior paving — are most of what remains.”

Having prevailed in its federal lawsuit against the Obama Administration, Thomas Aquinas College has received a permanent injunction against the HHS Contraceptive Mandate. As a result, the College is exempt from the requirement to offer abortifacient and contraceptive coverage to its employees, and may continue providing comprehensive health insurance in accordance with Catholic teaching. The government has until February 18 to appeal the ruling.
