Week two of Thomas Aquinas College’s new academic year concluded with the annual All-College Barbeque on both the East and West Coasts. On Saturday afternoon, students, staff, and faculty gathered to enjoy games, a delicious dinner, and excellent company, celebrating the approaching end of summer and the return of classes.

Students began their afternoon with a muddy tug-of-war tournament. The class spirit was palpable! Freshmen and sophomores were the first contenders, and it didn’t take long for the freshmen to come out on top. Afterward, the juniors and seniors went head-to-head, and the seniors pulled through to make it to the championship round. Despite a valiant effort, the seniors, drained from their previous match, succumbed to the strength and number of the freshmen, and the Class of 2029 claimed its first victory!

A rampant and joyful mud-fight broke out immediately after, and students of all classes ran to the ponds for a quick swim to wash off and beat the heat. Before long, they headed to St. Therese Hill for an epic slip-and-slide! Later in the afternoon, tutors and their families arrived and joined in the fun, playing cornhole and volleyball. All enjoyed a barbeque dinner, good conversations, and merriment well until into the evening.

In New England, a violent thunderstorm broke right as the All-College class games were about to begin. However, not even torrential rain and sporadic explosions of thunder could quench the competitive spirits of the students, and as soon as the showers began to let up, groups assembled by the pond behind St. Frassati Student Center for their own test of brawn. The mud-smeared, war-painted students arranged themselves along the ends of a long rope, by class, to prove their strength and spirit. The freshmen promptly seized victory against the seniors first, followed by the sophomores’ defeat at the hands of the juniors. In the final match, juniors faced the freshmen, and after a final tug, the East Coast newcomers also came away with the ultimate win.

Next, the students raced to the slip-and-slide, taking turns flying down into the sudsy mud below. Once all traces of mud, soap and grass were removed, the all regrouped in the student center for the barbeque. Faculty, staff, and students all feasted on classic American fare: grilled chicken, potato salad, corn on the cob, and potato chips. It was a pleasant close to a busy day, and though the spirit of competition is enjoyable and encouraging, the spirit of camaraderie is much more fruitful and rewarding.

It was a great start to the school year on both campuses, and all are looking forward to the blessings to come!
