Although September 23 at Thomas Aquinas College, New England, dawned cool and cloudy, the wet weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of students’ families and friends who made the trek to Western Massachusetts for this year’s Parent-Alumni Day.

Parent Alumni Mass

The festivities began with Mass in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, followed by brunch in Gould Commons. Recent graduates greeted old friends, and families squeezed around the tables to catch up with each other. “It is so wonderful to see you all here,” said Paula Cummings, president of the TAC Parent’s Association, to the cheerful crowd in Gould Commons. “You are here because you believe in this program, in your children, and the impact TAC will have on them.”

Next on the agenda were two seminars: one for parents and their students, another for alumni. Both groups read and discussed a selection from St. Thomas Aquinas’s treatise on the sacraments. Participants pondered whether the sacraments can be validly conferred by evil ministers and debated how they can be said to cause grace in their recipients. Parents got a taste for the Discussion Method, while alumni revived old habits, vigorously discussing great texts with good friends.

In the meantime, student volunteers kept an eye on the younger children, who played in the Pope St. John Paul II Athletic Center and on the sports field, enjoying a colorful bouncy castle …

Soon, however, parents and alumni took to the gym for a post-seminar faceoff on the basketball court. It was an exciting game, and the alumni carried the day by a close margin of 60-50.

After a long day of mental and physical exertion, dinner was most welcome. Families and alumni gathered on the lawn in front of Gould Hall for a grilled-chicken dinner, then made their way to the Bl. Frassati Student Center for an ice-cream social. Every foosball table was occupied, children raced around the room, and parents conversed over delicious sundaes, savoring the last hours of their visit.
