Because students at Thomas Aquinas College devote themselves to the intellectual and spiritual life, their time is often filled with poring over texts, discussing lofty topics, and prayer. These are all good things and aim to order the soul, but once a semester, another time comes, a break from classes and the rigors of active study: Don Rags, during which tutors give students their honest academic feedback. Oftentimes, there can be feelings of anticipation and nervousness as students await their meeting, but there’s more to Don Rags than that.

While all students (save for seniors) have a formal meeting to attend, they still have plenty of time for other pursuits. Students hike, venture off campus, and otherwise enjoy themselves. But they also come together for their semi-annual Open-Mic Night: a chance for all who are willing and able to share their talents with their classmates. Many look forward to the event as a chance to shine as well as an opportunity to celebrate their talented friends.

Last Wednesday, students on both coasts came together for just that. In California, they met under the stars and twinkling lights on St. Gladys Patio. Students gave moving performances of piano pieces and vocal numbers wrought with harmony. Others made their peers howl with laughter with stand-up routines, comedic songs, and poetry. Ensembles filled the audience with electric enthusiasm by performing original songs and well-known hits. The evening was seldom quiet, filled either with earnest performances or raucous laughter and applause.

By the end of the night, students, whether onstage or off, forged memories and had joyous fun. “I love Open-Mic Night,” said junior Sean Dillon. “I always look forward to seeing everyone go up there and put out their talents. There’s a lot of surprises each time with people you wouldn’t expect showing off hidden talents. It’s incredible.”

Meanwhile in New England — where autumn weather has very much arrived — Open-Night took place inside Olivia Music Hall. “With the new students, we had a great variety of talent this year,” said sophomore Daniella Martens.

Performances ranged from German songs to a VeggieTales renditions. “Students here bring so much from their own culture and how they grew up,” says freshman John Gutch. “The performances were well received and a good mix between seriousness and laughter.”
