Students walk out of Palmer

Students on the New England High School Summer Program woke Wednesday morning with the faint smell of smoke in their hair from last night’s bonfires! But after showering and getting dressed, they were fresh and ready to go, starting the day with breakfast in Gould Hall and the early Mass in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel.

At the morning’s class they examined the first 10 chapters of Genesis, which covers Creation, the story of Cain and Abel, and the Flood. Discussions focused on the significance of the two accounts of Creation and whether the devil lied to Adam and Eve. “My section compared the Pre-Socratics’ account of Creation with the Bible’s account,” said programmer Anne C. “We were able to find a lot of the small similarities in the accounts among the big differences.”

Sections also pondered the meaning of “goodness,” and many students grappled with the complex question of free will. “It’s weird to think about how Adam and Eve knew they had done something wrong once they ate the apple,” reflected programmer Lucy M. “They knew they had sinned without really knowing what sin was, since they had only known good before.”

Finished with their only class of the day, many students attended the midday Mass and then went to the Commons for a lunch of braised chicken and artichokes served over rice. There, the prefects announced a Connecticut River kayaking trip for the afternoon, which was met with vigorous applause and cheers.

We will have photos from the adventure — plus a recap of tonight’s activities — in tomorrow morning’s Summer Blog post!

Meanwhile, as promised, below are the group and section photos. Enjoy!
