Already midway through their first week at Thomas Aquinas College, students on the California High School Summer Program cannot believe how quickly the time is flying by. With that in mind, they carefully chose how to spend Wednesday afternoon’s recreation period.
A handful of high schoolers headed down to the Pope St. John Paul II Athletic Center for a game of volleyball with Fr. Sebastian. Other groups went rock climbing on the gym wall, swam in the pool, and tried their hands at art. Some practiced songs in preparation for their Open-Mic Night auditions, while a select few got to spend their afternoon preparing their parts for the upcoming performance of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Smiling, laughing, and talking through dinner over plates of chicken Alfredo pasta, Caesar salad, and garlic bread, the students shared their hopes of understanding and presenting the Euclidean propositions assigned for the upcoming days. Having discussed the basic principles of geometry and the Creation story that morning, programmers turned their attention to the story of Abraham and practiced Euclid’s first three demonstrations on chalkboards, preparing for the next day’s intellectual pursuits.
After praying their daily Rosary in the Chapel, the programmers headed to the coffee shop for some fun times with their friends. The night’s snack was ice-cream sundaes, featuring prefect Rose Anderson’s (CA’26) homemade brownies. Programmers enjoyed a variety of card games, chess, and ping pong, while groups of students and prefects played ultimate frisbee and volleyball outside.

The night concluded with consecration prayers and chicken nuggets in the residence halls before students went to bed, looking forward to the challenge of the next day’s demonstrations. Be sure to visit the Summer Program blog later today to see how they do!
