Students at the Summer Program

Having spent the earlier part of the day getting to know their classroom section’s dynamics during the first day of classes, students on California High School Summer Program spent the afternoon learning how well their sections work together outside of the classroom with the Section Games!

As soon as classes were over, the programmers ran to their residence halls to change from classroom attire to sports clothes, then congregated at the flagpole outside of St. Joseph’s Commons. They grouped together into their classroom sections and headed down to the lower campus for an afternoon of athletic competition!

Determined to prove theirs the best team in the Section Games, the students grew closer as they rallied together, practiced teamwork skills, and competed fiercely in the tournament. The first game consisted of throwing a volleyball around to fellow sectionmates, requiring the thrower to call out the catcher's name. Other games included passing through a hula hoop, running while balancing an egg on a spoon, and spinning around a baseball bat. The final game — tossing a water balloon as far as possible to a fellow student until it broke — decided the winning section. “It was really great to get to know my section outside of the classroom setting,” shared Katie P.

When the balloon-tossing competition was over, the prefects and students had a water-balloon fight! Already wet, students then went for a swim in the campus ponds, splashing water at each other and jumping into the pond from a rope swing. “It was so much fun!” said Peyton C.

Ready to eat, students enjoyed a dinner of chicken tenders, mashed potatoes with gravy, and steamed vegetables. They then made their way to St. Bernardine of Siena Library for study hall. There, they read Antigone, a sequel to Oedipus Rex, as well as select passages from the pre-Socratic philosophers, both of which they will discuss in today’s classes. Once study hall ended, students prayed the Rosary in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. St. Patrick’s Coffee Shop served Roy Rogers and Shirley Temple mocktails, and the Coffee Shop buzzed with conversations, music, and games of pool, foosball, ping pong, and cards.

On returning to their residence halls, programmers found a snack of Buffalo chicken wings waiting for them. After saying night prayers, they continued chatting in the common room until it was time to get some rest.
