Students on the 2025 California High School Summer Program

Wednesday morning on the California High School Summer Program began, as usual, with some attending the 7:15 a.m. Mass in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel, while others paid a visit to St. Patrick’s Coffee Shop. Then it was on to the morning’s class — and more Euclid!

Today students wrestled with three propositions: They proved themselves able to construct a line perpendicular to a given line in Book One, Proposition 11. They then proved that a line standing straight upon another forms angles equal to two right angles in Proposition 13. Finally, they proved the equality of vertical angles in Proposition 15.

With all these newfound convictions as their base, the students next inquired as to whether, with the knowledge and power from the first 15 propositions, one could form a square that is truly known to be a square? Can a figure now be made that certainly has four equal sides and angles? They contemplated, giving suggestions and testing different proofs.

Many then attended the midday Mass before enjoying a pizza lunch in St. Joseph Commons. The students next headed to their second and final class of the day, where they sought to delve deeper into the first 11 chapters of Genesis. They considered the days of Creation, wondering at the concept of time: a reality in the beginning, or a metaphor for order, or perhaps even something else? They marveled at the Fall and the promises made by God, questioning how they are fulfilled. They came to new convictions about the Old Testament, seeing it in a new and different light.
