“All of you have been the recipients of a great gift, this remarkable education. But with any great gift goes the burden,” said Rob Neal, president of Hager Pacific Properties, to some 65 Thomas Aquinas College students at a Career Forum on Sunday in St. Bernardine of Siena Library. “It’s going to be incumbent upon you to make your way out there and to share these gifts with others.”

On Saturday morning the freshman and sophomore classes matched soccer teams in the championship game of this year’s interclass tournament. Sophomore Stephen Carey scored the only goal of the first half with an in-the-corner shot. Teammate Louis Knuffke then contributed a goal in the second half, after which the sophomores held on to maintain the 2-0 shutout.

One Friday evening night each semester, groups of about 20 Thomas Aquinas College students from all classes — seniors and freshmen, sophomores and juniors — gather in classrooms across the campus for the semi-annual All-College Seminar. Although separate, these groups engage in a single, common activity, namely, reading, analyzing, and discussing the same text, one that is not part of the College’s ordinary curriculum. Two members of the teaching faculty lead each of the discussions, which are followed by a campus-wide party in St. Joseph Commons.

Last Saturday morning a small but dedicated group of students met in the parking lot behind Bl. Junipero Serra Hall for the inaugural “Laps for Life” campus race. At 10:00 a.m. sharp they set off around the hilly, one-mile drive that loops the campus. Novices made their way around the drive once, while the more experienced runners opted for a three-loop course. At the finish line, organizers offered prizes of candy-filled baby bottles — a fitting choice for this fundraising event, which benefited local crisis-pregnancy centers.
