At Thomas Aquinas College, California, the four classes went head-to-head in a riveting volleyball tournament on Saturday afternoon. Each team, comprised of six or seven representatives from their respective classes, arrived at the St. John Paul II Gymnasium, hungry for the title of champion.

Volleyball is a beloved staple of California campus culture. Students spend August and September playing in the College’s intramural league, a school-wide undertaking with several co-ed teams, and pick-up volleyball is a common sight year-round on the athletic field. It is no wonder, then, that students opt for a mid-semester tournament to decide the strongest class!

The tournament began with two simultaneous semifinal matches: one, freshmen vs. seniors; the other, sophomores vs. juniors. Each team played valiantly, and the excitement and determination on the court was palpable. In the end, the seniors and juniors claimed victory over their underclassmen opponents and a spot in the final round.

Team spirits were high as competitors took the field for the ultimate upperclassmen showdown. An enthusiastic throng of junior fanatics cheered and encouraged their classmates from the sidelines. This proved effective as the junior team, despite the close score and the strength of its opponents, came out on top after a two-set match, earning the class the title of “Volleyball Champions.”

“I just love our class. This year we’ve gotten to connect and bond with each other a lot more, and it shines through on the playing field,” explained Elizabeth Trinh (’27). “Overall, we have great energy, and we always uplift each other, and that’s what I love most about our class.”
