The sweet sound of classical melodies filled St. Cecilia Hall on an autumn Sunday afternoon as the semesterly Schubertiade began on the California campus. Students packed into the auditorium, eager to experience the musical dexterity of their peers.

Thomas Aquinas College’s Schubertiade is a twist on the original Schubertiade, an event held in celebration composer Franz Schubert’s works. The school’s adaptation includes a variety of classical composers and is an informal afternoon concert in which friends perform for friends. Lights are left on, and the curtains kept open to create a more relaxed atmosphere.

On stage, Assistant Dean Dr. Joseph Zepeda (‘04) introduced each musician and provided occasional fun facts about a piece and its composer to the audience. This semester’s Schubertiade saw music from Chopin, Haydn, Vivaldi, Schubert himself, and many others. Although the piano was many students’ instrument of choice, others performed on the violin and the guitar, and some even showed off their vocal talent. With each captivating piece, the audience erupted into applause. “I can’t believe I go to school with so many talented people!” exclaimed Gavin Lyons (‘27).

Following the final note, attendees partook in a cheese and wine reception, where students praised their friend’s performances and carried on conversations about the music they had just enjoyed together. “I really love Schubertiades,” commented Gemma Edwards (‘28). “It’s so cool to see the effort everyone puts into their pieces, and the results are beautiful!”
