A few times each semester, students at Thomas Aquinas College gather at the home of one of their tutors to enjoy an evening meal and each other’s company. Tutor Dr. Margaret Hughes recently hosted one such event for Section 1-A of the New England Freshman Class.

“What we’re doing at Section Dinners is taking the discourse and the curiosity we’re developing in class and moving it beyond the formalities,” Dr. Hughes explains. “We see what it means to live an intellectual life.”

Each “section” at the College consists of about 18 students who take all their classes together for an entire academic year. Section Dinners provide an opportunity for students and tutors to continue the discussion outside the classroom and form closer friendships. At these dinners, usually hosted by one or two tutors, the room buzzes with energy and laughs as the group enjoys a home-cooked meal prepared by their tutor. After dinner, the section enjoys dessert and plays games.

“I’m not as close with everyone in my section, but dinners like this allow me to get to know my friends better, and especially Miss Hughes,” says Alina Stark (’25).

Surprising the group, freshmen Jozef Nijis and Franz Alexander Forrester brought their guitars along, and Dr. Hughes distributed printed lyrics to the other students. “I had a blast singing along with everyone,” says Franz. “It was nice seeing all of us do something together.” Joining in on the fun were fellow tutors Dr. Peter Cross and Dr. Patrick Gardner, as well as Mrs. Gardner and the couple’s children.

“The goal of section dinners is to enjoy creation, and to enjoy the ways that we are created as the kind of beings that we are — intellectual,” says Dr. Hughes. “Having good food in a different setting indicates to us that we should slow down and not worry about moving on to the next thing, which frees us to enjoy good conversations.”
