At the peak of fall, Thomas Aquinas College, New England held its annual Oktoberfest Saturday at Ex Libris Farm, just a few miles from campus.

The festivities started in the early afternoon, with a rousing wood-chopping competition between students, while bystanders cheered on the sidelines and children called out quips and wisecracks. Upperclassmen faced off with lowerclassmen, and classmates challenged each other to a chop for the win. “It was a lot of fun watching everyone compete,” observed Katherine Tuttle (‘29). “The tutor kids' commentary was hilarious.”

Afterward, there was an intense tutor vs. student barrel race in the field by the barn. The teams went head to head for five rounds until the students upped their game and stole victory in the last round. As a fundraiser for the Class of 2026, pairs of students raced to be the first to catch a pig for a prize, with classmates Matthew Robilotto (‘29) and Nathaniel Brinck-Lund (‘29) taking the final win.

On the open field, dozens of tables were bedecked with gourds, fall leaves, and candles, with bunting and lights strung up overhead. As the games wound down, Head Chaplain Rev. Greg Markey said grace, and all sat down to generous servings of bratwurst and sauerkraut, potatoes and pretzels.

Many of the students spent their mornings before the Oktoberfest baking elaborate entries for the annual Pie Competition, and after dinner, the judges assembled to taste and test the handiwork of the bakers. The win went to Naomi Pride (’28) for her phenomenal pecan pie.

With all competition complete, students lit a cozy bonfire. With members of the faculty, they enjoyed games of cornhole and chatted around tables, while others mingled and sang songs around the fire. The evening came to a comfortable close with cheery company, good music, and the satisfaction of a day well-spent.
