To help raise money for their return to Washington’s March for Life in January, the students of Thomas Aquinas College, New England staged an Oktoberfest last Saturday, hosted by a gracious alumni couple, Emily (Barry ’11) and Joe Sullivan (’09).

“When the students came to my husband and me for a place to host a fundraiser, we were delighted,” says Mrs. Sullivan, who works in the dean’s office of the New England campus. “We’re only five minutes down the road with so much land, so this was perfect to share our home.”

Students played live music for the patrons, while others assisted in face painting and lawn games. The event attracted most of the student body as well as much of the community surrounding the New England campus. “Our gathering intended to bring together the College and our local community under the truth that the unborn have sacred human lives,” says senior Sarah Preciado, who helped organize the event.

Shortly before dinner, the students held a highly competitive log-splitting contest. Although there was no definite winner, the contestants noted the excitement from the audience that grew greater with each successive round. “I was so focused on chopping,” says junior John Metilly, “but I could hear how crazy the crowd got.”

The event proved successful both in terms of building ties within the community and to help students cover the costs of their travel in January, when they will witness to the sanctity of human life in the nation’s capital.
