First the seniors, then the juniors: Finally, it was the sophomores’ turn to officially welcome the Class of 2026 to Thomas Aquinas College with dances on both coasts.

California

The festivities in California began with entertainment in St. Cecilia’s Hall: a short film, courtesy of “Wise Fool Productions,” about two sophomores trying to make the entertainment for a dance. Students loved this meta-fiction film, still laughing as they made their way to the patio behind St. Gladys Hall, which the sophomores had worked tirelessly to decorate according to their Fiesta theme. Vibrant paper decorations hung from above, dappling the sky red, green, yellow, and more, interspersed with string-lights that winked down at dancegoers.

After totaling piñatas and scrambling to collect the candy, students eagerly took to the dance floor. Between swinging and waltzing, snowballs and Sadie Hawkins events kept things interesting, while beside the dance floor students enjoyed quesadillas, sweetbread, and other savory Mexican fare. Later, a sophomore band took to the stage to provide live music: jazz, bossa nova, and traditional Spanish songs brought many more to the dance floor.

New England

In New England, the sophomores took their dance’s cue from the resplendent Massachusetts autumn, transforming the Bl. Giorgio Frassati Student Center into a beautiful fall wonderland. They covered the walls in bright orange and red leaves and lined tables with pumpkins and haybales. “It’s like they bottled up the essence of fall and let it into this room,” remarked one student.

After the entertainment — a music video parody of ABBA’s “Mamma Mia” — the dancing began in earnest. The fireplace crackled on one end of the hall while delicious scents wafted from the kitchen on the other. Between songs, dancegoers took their fill of piping hot steak-and-cheese bombs and pumpkin muffins. And of course, no autumn celebration would be complete without potato-sack races, which culminated in a freshman v. sophomore relay — which the sophomores won by nearly a lap’s length! To the merry sound of swing, waltz, foxtrot, and even the Virginia Reel, students danced late into the cool October night.
