In the culmination of this year’s fall soccer season, two women’s teams went head-to-head in a riveting championship game on the California campus Thursday night.

Following upperclassmen seminar, spectators rushed down to the athletic field, eager to glimpse the epic showdown between the two teams and their respective captains, Charlie Gerrard and Elena Walz (both ’26). Team Walz had played an impressive season, but Team Gerrard, the underdog, was unfazed, and both teams took the field full of tenacity.

Team Gerrard started out strong, taking the lead early on with a goal from Grace Doyle (’27). But Team Walz fought back and scored two goals before the end of the first half, making the halftime score 2–1. As the second half began, Gerrard’s team battled for the tie, and Team Walz fought valiantly to keep the lead, until Gianna Ferri (’26) of Team Gerrard took a soaring shot to tie the game. Time trickled away on the clock as the teams clashed, hungry for the winning goal. With just a few minutes left, team captain Charlie scored the winning goal on a corner kick, making the final score 3–2. With the referee’s final whistle, Team Gerrard erupted into cheers.

“It feels so good to be number one this last year, our senior year!” Charlie commented on the win. “St. Jude really came in clutch. He was our intercessor for the past few games!”

It had been a rough season for Team Gerrard. Several forfeits and canceled games resulted in significantly less playing time. Nevertheless, the team fought tooth and nail; and, in its semi-final game, its members called upon St. Jude, the patron of the impossible, for his intercession. With their exhilarating win in the semi-final, the teammates adopted St. Jude as their official patron, who carried them all the way to victory in the championship.

“Even though we didn’t play much this season, the team just snapped right together, and showed so much courage and intensity,” said honorary coach, Matteo Capalozza (’26). “Charlie was the glue, and St. Jude gave us strength!”
