The California campus’s student theater group, the St. Genesius Players, charmed its audience with a flowery production of Jane Austen’s Emma, adapted for the stage and directed by sophomore Madeleine Brittain (’28), on the evening of Alumni and Parent Day 2025. The performance, which took place in the Fritz B. Burns Auditorium, transported onlookers to a nineteenth century English countryside, rampant with romance.

The story follows Emma Woodhouse, a rich and intelligent young woman — here played by Theresia Kuebler (’28) — who has discovered a love and skill for matchmaking. In the name of this supposed dexterity, Emma inserts herself into the romantic affairs of her dear friend, Harriet Smith, played by Elaine Grimm (’28), which results in a series of several comedic setbacks. Eventually, Emma realizes her own love for a lifelong friend, Mr. Knightley, played by Dominic Monnereau (’28), and, in a revelatory turn of events, is forced to face her own stubbornness and pride.

The players won the hearts of their audience with their vibrant characters and clever banter in a fantastic display of the cast and crew's talent and dedication.
