On the feast of the Annunciation, students at Thomas Aquinas College, New England, celebrated Our Lady, patroness of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, with the Rosary, brownies, and dancing.

Beginning the festivities in the Virgin’s honor, Head Chaplain Rev. Greg Markey gave a beautiful talk about Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Students gathered in the Chapel before her icon, which was specially commissioned and authentically handwritten by a sister of the Order of the Assumption of the Virgin and St. Bruno. Fr. Markey began by explaining the background of and devotion to this image of Our Lady, as well as the symbolism and deeper meaning in the icon itself, which portrays the Blessed Mother consoling her young Son as he contemplates His coming Passion.

Fr. Markey explored the importance of iconography and Eastern religious art, as well as their influence. The excellence of the icon is not based on the merit of the author or the impression of the artwork, but rather focused on the mystery of the truths that the icon attempts to intimate to the beholder. Fr. Markey concluded with the prayer of blessing and dedication which was read by the Most Rev. William D. Byrne, Bishop of Springfield, when the icon was originally established in the Chapel in 2022. “Think about these words every time you come in and pray before Our Lady,” he encouraged. “Pray to her and ask that she might continue to do miracles in the name of Christ, and grant peace and consolation to all those who pray before her.”

Following Fr. Markey’s talk, the students joined in praying the Rosary together before the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, then reconvened in St. Frassati Student Center to celebrate with homemade brownies and ice cream, dancing, and conversation. “It was very nice to learn more about our Chapel and icon,” said Sophie Habsburg (NE’26), “and the brownies and ice cream with everyone afterward were just perfect to celebrate Our Lady.” William Claeys (NE’27) agreed, “It was so wonderful to hear more about the history and devotion to the patroness of our Chapel; there couldn’t have been a more fitting occasion for this talk than the Feast of the Annunciation.”
