Over the weekend, the students of Thomas Aquinas College, California, welcomed a team of seminarians from St. John’s Seminary in nearby Camarillo for a friendly soccer match.

The College enjoys many ties with the seminary. Rev. Michael Masteller (’13), recently ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, is an alumnus of both institutions, and fellow TAC alum Jorge Moncada Hernandez (’18) — on hand Saturday to support the seminarian squad — is currently in formation at St. John’s. Meanwhile, Rev. Jorge Lopez, California’s newest chaplain, serves as a part-time professor at the seminary during the school week.

Players warmed up on the field while an audience of students and a few spectator-seminarians gathered to cheer their respective teams. Only a few minutes after the opening prayer, the students snagged an early lead with four goals. It was a tough game, and the seminarians ran so as to win, but in the end the perishable wreath went to the students.
