The New England campus celebrated the mid-point of its spring Don Rags with a stunning showcase of talent at the biannual Open Mic Night.

One week after their West Coast counterparts, students on the New England campus hurried to Olivia Music Hall for their own performance. When they arrived, they found the lobby well-stocked with snacks and treats for all, and after a bit of fraternizing, the popcorn-bearing audience swiftly seated itself for the show. The lineup for the night was a showcase of diverse and dynamic talents, set against the lovely backdrop from the spring play the weekend prior.

Instruments varied from the accordion to the lute to the common soup spoon — Simon Bock’s (NE’28) impressive performance of “Trains at the Station” on the spoons raised the roof and earned the first standing ovation of the night! Other acts included poetry recitation, both tragic and comedic, and music from acapella, to opera, to folk. At the show’s climax, the music hall plunged into darkness for Garbriel DiIulio’s (NE’28) mesmerizing Japanese yo-yo act.

Afterward, students laughed and talked together about the event, congratulating the performers and finishing off sundry refreshments. “Catherine Otrando’s tap dancing was so engaging that I felt like I was up there on the stage with her,” said Anastasia O’Brien (NE’28). “I think this was one of our best Open Mic Nights yet,” added Stephen King (NE’26). “There were some great talents that I was really happy to see, and I must say, I was exceedingly impressed.”
