Silhouette: two students on a bench against the sky

For students on the 2021 New High School Summer Program, Saturday’ excitement continued right through what proved to be an equally robust Sunday. The day began with two solemn Masses, and then a leisurely brunch in Gould Commons. Afterward, students made their way down to one of the athletic fields for a campus-wide game of softball. Attendees and prefects divided themselves into two teams, and in a hard-fought contest, prefect Orion LaCour (’22) led his group to victory.

The game featured an “All-American” theme, and the patriotic participants decorated their faces with streaks of red, white, and blue paint. A few managed to create some fairly intricate designs!

  • Two walk down past Stone Hall toward the softball field
  • Seven students sitting on the grass, watching the game
  • Four students chatting on the grass
  • A student holding the ball, with the bunting-decorated backstop in the distance
  • Two students seated beside the back of a pickup truck
  • A student seated in a row of chairs, wearing a baseball cap and smiling at the camera
  • Students place their hands over their hearts for the Pledge of Allegiance

  • Students pass one another high-fiving
  • Five girls cheering enthusiastically outside the Meany Gym

To cool off, many then enjoyed rides on a slip n’ slide set up next to Meany Gymnasium:

The activities ended shortly before dinner, giving programmers time to return to their residence halls to freshen up, and in some cases to squeeze in a quick afternoon nap! A first-class meal of steak and potato wedges was then served in Gould Commons, and then it was time for study hall in Dolben Library. Students spent the time reading over Euclid’s first geometrical postulates, common notions, and definitions, as well as making a start in Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy, all of which they will discuss in today’s classes.

To cap off the evening, the group gathered in Tracy Student Center for a second dance practice. Prefect Dan Selmeczy (’08) continued instruction on swing and rumba steps, and under his masterful hand the group is quickly growing in confidence and ability!

Second Dance Class

Then it was off to the residence halls for a much-needed rest. Today holds in store fascinating class discussions, so be sure to check back this afternoon for the next report!
