Students at the Summer Program

The students on the California Summer Program bade farewell to Boethius on Thursday, then departed for Los Angeles and a trip full of arts and music to the Getty Center and Hollywood Bowl!

The programmers lunched on chicken enchiladas, pinto beans, rice, and chips, full of enthusiasm for welcoming what the rest of the day held in store. They loaded onto the buses, said a traveling prayer, and rolled out for a day in sunny L.A.

Upon arrival at the Getty, students carefully examined paintings, sculptures, and furniture from ancient to modern times. They inspected the works of famous artists, such as Vincent van Gogh’s Irises and Edgar Degas’ The Milliners, which tutor Dr. John Nieto discussed earlier in the week during his lecture on art and beauty. “It was so impressive,” said Lili N. “I wish we could have stayed there longer.” Yet as much as students desired to remain marveling at the collection, they had one more important stop to make before the day was over.

At the Highland Camrose Park near the Hollywood Bowl, the programmers devoured Jersey Mike’s sandwiches to their heart’s content, taking their sustenance on the park benches. The prefects also presented Abby S. with a chocolate cake for her birthday, and the whole group sang “Happy Birthday” to her.

Later, the students listened to a soul-stirring concert under the open sky in the Hollywood Bowl, performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The first part was Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, featuring pianist Hélène Grimaud, which ended with an applause that echoed throughout the amphitheater. The students got some ice cream during intermission, returning to their seats for a Greig Peer Gynt Suite, conducted by Tabita Berglund. The suite tells the story of a young man who lives an immoral life but eventually attains redemption by returning to the woman who has loved him unconditionally throughout the years.

On the way back to campus, the group prayed the Rosary on the buses. Some students then drifted to sleep, others played music in the background, and a few read Parker’s Back for this morning’s class. “The community is amazing,” reflected Armando A. “The classes, the campus, and the prayer life, too.”

Worn out from the busy and fun day, the art and music connoisseurs got some rest back on campus before today — the last full day of the program! Stop by the Summer Program Blog this afternoon to read about their last class!
