Summer Program students in Boston

Spirits were high Saturday on the New England High School Summer Program, as students spent the day deep in the heart of American history.

The morning began early with Mass, grounding the group in prayer, followed by breakfast in Gould Hall. Students then grabbed their backpacks and water bottles and gathered for the much-anticipated trip to Boston!

The ride into the city was full of laughter and chatter as prefects led a lively game of “Two Truths and a Lie.” From surprise talents to unlikely travel stories, the game gave everyone a deeper glimpse into the lives of their prefects. Even those half-asleep at the start of the ride perked up quickly as the game took hold.

Once in Boston, the group began its journey at the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. Standing on the deck, where sailors once fought for American independence, brought history vividly to life. From there, students followed the iconic Freedom Trail through the North End and beyond, weaving through centuries of American memory. Groups paused at each historic site — Bunker Hill, Paul Revere’s house, the Old North Church. Students stopped where revolutionaries once stood and heard the stories of courage, risk, and hope that helped shape the nation.

Programmers paused in Little Italy, where a much-welcomed break came in the form of sweet treats — fresh cannoli and iced coffee, enjoyed at a charming café. Rested and recharged, the group continued on its way, passing landmarks such as Faneuil Hall, the Old State House, and the site of the Boston Massacre. The winding red-brick trail finally led to Boston Common, where the day’s walk came to a delicious close with a pizza picnic. The bus ride back to campus was quiet, filled with contented sighs and sleepy chatter. But the evening wasn’t over!

Awaiting the students was a bonfire under the summer stars. All gathered with hot cocoa, huddling near the flames as the prefects led songs — some silly, some soulful. Laughter mingled with music, as the evening came to a close.

So, too, does this blog post — the lone post for today. Come back to the Summer Program blog Monday morning for a recap of Sunday’s events!
