Students at the Summer Program

Students marched to the Pope St. John Paul II Athletic Center after Monday’s classes to kick off the New England High School Summer Program’s Section Games, in which the four classroom sections (12 students each) faced off in a series of challenges designed to test their speed, strategy, and team spirit. Each section picked a team name: The Pious Eggs, Sons of Thunder, The Recs Rex, and The Grapes of Wrath. (NB: The College is indemnified of all liability regarding these names.)

The first challenge was the human knot. Students locked arms in a chaotic circle of elbows, attempting to untangle themselves into a single unbroken ring. Elisabet N. of the Recs Rex team took leadership, saying, “We play this game as a family all the time! Follow my instructions and we can win!” Sure enough, after much frantic twisting and turning — and screamed instructions — Recs Rex emerged victorious.

The second game was the Lie-Down Race. No napping allowed! Teams had to lie prostrate in a line as fast as possible, shoulder to shoulder, then pop up again and sprint to the next checkpoint. Recs Rex and the Grapes of Wrath were head-to-head for victory, but the Pious Eggs crept up and stole the crown from both teams.

Next was the Hula Hoop Relay, a deceptively tricky race, where teammates passed a hula hoop down the line without letting go of each other’s hands. After many tangles and topples, Recs Rex won again, replacing what dignity its members had lost hula-hooping with brilliant glory.

The last challenge was classic dodgeball, summer edition! Sections ducked and dipped with a competitive spirit, riding high to win the last challenge. With a tremendous flop from John P. in a two vs. two tie-breaker, Rex Recs took first place yet again, with the Pious Eggs in second place. To conclude the eventful contests, the prefects played all the students and, after a very long game, claimed the victory (of course).

After the high-energy excitement of Section Games, the students headed to dinner, hungry and hot. With only a short break before study hall, they learned the art of the three-minute shower, then hurried down to Dolben Library, books in hand. Tonight’s study hall opened with a presentation from prefect Pedro da Silva (’25), who spoke on the discipline of productive study. He reminded students that the intellectual life, like any habit, takes practice, patience, and structure. He provided them with many insightful tips and offered the mentorship of the prefects.

After study hall, students and prefects gathered in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel for Rosary, bringing the busy day back to the Lord. Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed Tuo Nomine da gloriam!

After the Rosary, there was a social hour in Bl. Frassati Student Center, with board games, table games, Italian sodas, and conversation. As curfew approached, students made their way back to the residence halls for a midnight snack and chat before bed. From dodgeball to discipline, the day was filled with the kind of joy that comes from living, learning, and laughing together.
