The entire Summer Program with their tutors pose on the Chapel steps

Students on the California High School Summer Program were excited this morning to get back to the classroom after what has been a fun and eventful weekend. Following morning Mass and breakfast, the classes met for their first discussion on Euclid.

The ancient geometer’s work holds a place of special importance in the Thomas Aquinas College curriculum, and freshmen spend the entire year studying and grappling with his magnum opus, The Elements. Today tutors guided students as they pored over several of Euclid’s definitions, postulates, and common notions. The discussions were fascinating, forcing students to think about basic geometrical figures like the line, circle, and triangle in ways they never had before.

Following the morning class was midday Mass and then a lunch of orange chicken and rice in St. Joseph Commons. In the afternoon class, students began their first of many discussions of Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy. Today they focused on Lady Philosophy’s first appearance to the disheartened and imprisoned Boethius and her entreaties for the captive to reorient himself with regards to worldly happiness and fortune.

As promised, below are the photos of classroom sections:
