Students in the benches at the Hollywood Bowl, waiting for the light to go down

What an evening for this year’s High School Summer Program! After a morning of presenting Euclidean propositions in the classroom and an early afternoon study session, everyone boarded buses and rode down to Los Angeles for a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. The group arrived on site early, affording students time to munch on a dinner of Jersey Mike’s subs before entering the amphitheater. Many also treated themselves to popcorn and other snacks inside the park

The evening’s program featured a global premier of Ricardo Molla’s Fanfare for a New Beginning, followed by Thea Musgrave’s Trumpet Concerto. The night finished off with an engrossing performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The outdoor stadium, an iconic landmark in the Hollywood Hills, features acoustics unparalleled for their clarity and resonance. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and the cool night air together with the live music made for a spectacular evening.

Bus groups prayed the Rosary on the ride back to campus and, as it was late, some programmers managed to get in a short nap on the road. The residence halls quieted down quickly, and the weary but happy students were soon asleep.

Another day of Euclidean props, Boethius, and the famous annual quad race are all on the schedule for today, so be sure to check back this afternoon for updates!
