Lest anyone be concerned that Saturday morning’s hike and Mass in the foothills surrounding campus would be followed by a quiet, lazy afternoon without much to do, worry not. The activities were just beginning!

Back on campus, the afternoon consisted of a thrilling volleyball tournament. Summer Program prefects captained teams of attendees who faced off on several different courts, and the more successful groups made their way through a large double-elimination bracket. Prefect Kevin Heffernan’s (’22) team emerged victorious, even getting the better of a well-rested all-tutor team in the notoriously difficult final game.

An appetizing barbecue of steak and hot dogs followed in the picnic area adjacent to St. Joseph’s Commons. Then it was time for the event of the evening: Open Mic Night. Dozens of students, both solo and in small groups, performed in St. Cecilia Hall for their peers. Most popular were musical performances, including voice, piano, and guitar, but there were also comedic acts and even one or two poetry recitations. Everyone in the stands had a great time, and the majority of acts received standing ovations in addition to thundering applause.

Afterward, program chaplain Rev. Sebastian Walshe, O.Praem (’94), led a Rosary procession around campus, and then many returned to the auditorium, this time for a Saturday night showing of the movie Cinderella Man. As the show ran late, students were treated to a special curfew extension and returned to their residence halls close to midnight!

This afternoon features an exciting trip to beautiful Santa Barbara and more, so be sure to check back for the photos and details!
