On the eve of Commencement 2016, Thomas Aquinas College President Michael F. McLean hosted a late-afternoon reception for members of the Senior Class and their parents at the Doheny Hacienda. Afterward, the College Parents’ and Alumni Associations jointly hosted their third annual dinner for graduates and their families in St. Joseph Commons. Tlaquepaque, a popular local Mexican restaurant, served fresh tacos with all the fixings:

Today the United States Supreme Court unanimously issued an order in Zubik v. Burwell, a case challenging the HHS mandate that religious institutions must facilitate the provision of insurance coverage for contraceptives, abortifacients, and other objectionable services to their employees, contrary to their deeply held religious beliefs. Thomas Aquinas College is a co-plaintiff in the case.

On May 14, Thomas Aquinas College celebrated its 42nd Commencement Exercises, honoring the 79 members of the Class of 2016. The day began with the Baccalaureate Mass of the Holy Spirit in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. The Most Rev. Salvatore J. Cordileone, Archbishop of San Francisco, served as the principal celebrant and homilist:

Note: Each year the graduating class elects one of its members to present the Senior Address at Commencement. Upon graduation, this year’s speaker, April Shonnard of Carson City, Nevada, plans to pursue studies in speech therapy.

As part of Wednesday Night’s President’s Dinner in St. Joseph Commons, Thomas Aquinas College bid farewell not only to the soon-to-be-departing members of the Class of 2016, but also to four other stalwarts of the community — two chaplains and two tutors. President Michael F. McLean additionally used the occasion to honor the services of one dedicated member of the administrative faculty for his 20 years of faithful service to the College.
