Catholic Businessman Barry Rowan Advises Students at Career Fair
To kick off Saturday’s Career Fair at Thomas Aquinas College, California, students got to hear words of wisdom and some practical advice from a notable guest speaker: Catholic businessman Barry Rowan, author of The Spiritual Art of Business: Connecting the Daily with the Divine.
Mr. Rowan opened his remarks by painting a portrait with playful anecdotes of himself in his childhood years: strong-willed and stubborn, but with a deep softness, characterized by a love and desire for the Lord. He described the inner turmoil he faced later on as a man in business and his struggle to synthesize his blossoming career with his relationship with God. Questions and uncertainties of this nature plagued him daily — until he learned to embrace them. “As we are here at the Career Fair,” he said, “one of my encouragements for you is to embrace the questions. As we stay with the questions, God will lead us into the answer, which ultimately is God Himself.”
Mr. Rowan emphasized the impact of finding the divine even in the mundane, approaching the workplace with a life-giving perspective instead of a life-draining one. “Think about God’s perspective of the work He is calling you into,” he advised. Intentionality, constant prayerfulness, and a willingness to serve are key to discovering the depth of meaning which underlies every career. “I hope that you will go about your lives at Thomas Aquinas College,” he concluded, “and after, with a zest for life, and a childlike sense of wonder, stepping into this beautiful, beautiful life that God has given us.”
Following the talk, students perused St. Cecilia Hall, browsing booths and interacting with representatives from Mother of Divine Grace School, the Classical Learning Test, and The Alvarez Firm — manned by alumnus and attorney Justin Alvarez (’97) — and numerous other businesses Many students distributed copies of their resumes, and several opted for informational interviews. At the fair’s conclusion, Mr. Rowan, accompanied by his wife, Linda, led a small question-and-answer session, full of wisdom related to marriage, time management, balance, and discernment.
