In an effort to help freshmen — as well as returning students — make the most of Thomas Aquinas College’s integrated curriculum, last Wednesday evening, the New England campus hosted the year’s first “Get with the Program” workshop.

Father-son duo Dr. Richard (’75) and Dr. Peter Cross (’11) gave a joint talk titled, “Prepping Props and Readings like a Pro,” in which they presented guidelines on how to prepare for class efficiently and effectively. Specifically, the two focused on how students can best discuss the Great Books as part of the College’s Socratic seminars.

“Reading a book is not a passive act, but a conversation,” explained the senior Dr. Cross. “In order to have a full and conclusive discussion, you must engage in it actively.”

The Crosses encouraged students to read texts closely and mindfully, to prepare thoroughly and thoughtfully for mathematical demonstrations and language translations, and, in the words of the junior Cross, “to pray for the gift of wisdom and the desire to achieve it.”

The presenters ended with advice on overcoming stage fright and fear of failure, urging students to see these disappointing moments as opportunities to grow in humility and courage. “Fear that is untested remains simply fear and anxiety,” observed Dr. Richard Cross. “Only once fear is tested can it become courage.”
