Thomas Aquinas College, New England, was abuzz with life once more Thursday morning as the Class of 2029 arrived on campus, starting its four-year sojourn as students of truth.

The new freshmen came to campus one by one, stopping in Bl. Frassati Student Center to check in, then finding their new rooms in the residence halls. Families shopped the bookstore and walked the campus grounds, awed by the beautiful, historic buildings and encouraged by the friendly greetings from everyone they met.

After a tour of campus and Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, all gathered on Gould Lawn for a barbeque dinner, where families chatted together. When dinner ended, they split up: parents attended an orientation in Gould Hall, while freshmen and their siblings headed to Bl. Frassati Student Center for ice cream and camaraderie with their new classmates to finish off the night.

The next day, some freshmen woke up with the sun to attend the morning Mass, then joined the rest of the group for breakfast. Then, everyone headed to Dolben Auditorium for orientation, where they heard from Assistant Dean Stephen Shivone and Dean Steven Cain, who told the freshmen about the mission of the College and offered tips about how to succeed in their academic, social, and spiritual pursuits.

“We are honored and joyful that you have chosen to spend your next four years with us,” said Dr. Cain. “Let your progress be measured not by your grades but by your progress along the streams and rivers of knowledge.”

Fueled with a greater understanding of the education they were about to undertake, students spent the rest of their morning getting ID photos, finishing registration, and reading C.S. Lewis’s “Learning in Wartime” for their first seminar that afternoon. When the moment arrived, they filed into St. Gianna Molla Hall, both excited and nervous to meet their classmates in discussion for the first time. Seminars went without a hitch, as the freshmen quickly got the hang of the Discussion Method, trading opinions and arguments as they considered the notion of education for its own sake, regardless of whatever conflict lies beyond campus.

Later, they enjoyed dinner and attended the Freshman Soiree, playing icebreaker games to strengthen bonds between their sections and each other.

Tomorrow, members of the Class of 2029 will matriculate, officially beginning their term as students at Thomas Aquinas College!
